Character · VIKRAM-09 | The Name, and the Man Who Took It

Vikram Malhotra

Two people. Vikram was the last state-designed environmental hero, obedient to the end. Sanil took his name — not to honour him, but to mark the risk of forgetting.

There are two Vikrams, and the archive is careful about the difference.

Vikram was the last of the state-designed environmental heroes. His suit was green — symbolic, strategic, and built from conflict materials. His neural interface could calculate urban air toxicity faster than satellites. He did not question orders. That was his flaw.

Earlier prototypes had. Asha rerouted monsoon floods without state permission. Prahlad refused to displace coastal communities. They were decommissioned. Vikram endured until he didn’t — the Bhubaneshwar Evictions, the Indore Fires, the 2060 Disclosures, a timeline collapsing under the weight of perfect obedience.

Sanil is the man in the homemade suit. A junior operative with the Delhi Climate Brigade — a support technician who maintained their equipment and believed in the mission completely — he vanished after the Disclosures. Some said he leaked evidence. Others said he cracked under guilt. Now he wanders the districts in a garish green-and-brown costume of repeated mendings, a cape that looks suspiciously like repurposed curtain fabric, and a poorly stitched emblem covering a faded Climate Brigade insignia.

He announces himself as Environmental Guardian and the last true superhero of India. Fifteen years after the Disclosures, superhero sightings are more punchline than news, and most people swipe the broadcast away.

I kept the name, so we’d remember what a good man turned obedient can do.

The archive keeps him under two headings and refuses to merge them. Obj-V078 is tagged the Vikram Protocol, and what survives of it is fragments of betrayal and exile that do not reconstruct cleanly.
